Dons Beat Buena for Frosh Championship, Dons 3 Buena 2
The Dons Freshman team took the Channel League Frosh championship with a hard fought win at Buena! Connor McManigal started on the mound and shut out Buena for the 1st two innings. In the 3rd, Buena took the lead with a single, a sac bunt, and another single to make it 0-1. In the 4th, Michael Day drew a lead-off walk. Then Tanner Guerra singled and Zach Torres hit an RBI double. Toby Minehan then reached on an error, but Buena recovered and got an out in a rundown at the plate. Miles Waters walked to load the bases, and Johnny Brontsema drew a based loaded walk to make the score 2-1. Evan Smith took over on the mound in the 4th. Buena got one run back on a double and an error to tie the game 2-2. After a scoreless 5th inning, the Dons took back the lead in the top of the 6th when Toby hit a lead-off single and Miles followed it up with an RBI double. Buena threatened to come back in the bottom of the 6th, when the first two batters reached base. The third batter then hit a shallow foul popup near the 1st base line and Jason Jimenez ran out to catch the ball for out #1. Jason then threw the ball to 1st to double the runner off for out #2. The parents in the stands then earned an assist, shouting that the runner on third, who had come in to score, had not tagged up. The ball was thrown to third and the runner was called out for a 2-3-5 triple play!!! Buena threatened again in the 6th and loaded the bases with one out, but great Dons defense saved the day again with a 4-6-3 double play to close out the win. The Dons hung on in a nail biter, winning a 3-2 battle and earning the frosh championship!
